Adventure games are among the most unique of any games. They don’t fit into any one category or genre and often times they’ll fit into several genres at once. The only real prerequisite for a game to be an adventure game is that it must take you on an adventure. That describes most games really. However, after updating this article for so many years, we have a feel for what kind of games readers kind of expect when browsing this genre. If you’re ready for a list of games that will do just that, here are our picks for the best adventure games on Android!
Amanita Design is a Google Play developer. They have a few really good adventure games under their belt. They include the legendary Machinarium, Samorost 3, and Botanicula. Machinarium is a very popular puzzle game. You play as a robot. Your goal is to solve puzzles and save your girlfriend from vagabonds. Samorost 3 is an adventure puzzle game surrounding a gnome and his magic flute. Botanicula is about a group bugs trying to save their tree’s seed from bad guys. These are some of the best puzzle-adventure games available on Google Play.
Crashland is already among the best adventure games from 2016. You play as a space trucker named Flux. The game starts with you crashing onto an alien planet. Your job is to retrieve your cargo, build yourself a base, fight bad guys, and save the world. It has a lot of game elements, including crafting, combat, RPG-style character leveling, and you can even tame creatures to fight for your side. It’s a deep game with a ton of content that you can play on both mobile and PC. It’s 4.8 rating on Google Play is accurate.
Doom and Destiny Advanced is a jRPG style game where you form a party of adventurers, fight monsters, and save the world. Unlike most, this one doesn’t take itself too seriously. There is quirky, humorous dialogue. There is also a fun little story to play through. The game boasts dozens of hours of storyline, 500 places to explore, 15 character classes, 22 character outfits, tons of bad guys, 150 special powers, and more. There is also online play supported for both PvP and co-op so you can play online with or against friends. It’s inexpensive and there’s a ton of adventuring to do!
The Frostrune is a point-and-click adventure game with Norse and Viking themes and a fun story line. You explore a random settlement with signs of a recent panic. There are various ancient runes, burial mounds, and stuff like that. The game also features puzzles, above average graphics, and more. The story apparently uses culturally and historically accurate information as well. We did a double-take when we saw the price. At the time of this writing, the game is free on Google Play. However, it runs for $4.99 on iTunes and $9.99 on PC. The price might be a temporary sale. If it’s not free, then it’s probably the same price as it is on iOS.
Monument Valley 1 and 2 are two of the most popular puzzle-adventure games available. You move levels around because each level is the puzzle. Players are treated to optical illusions, a vague but fun story, and a consistent experience through two games. The first game includes the standard story with a DLC ($1.99). The second game is currently$4.99. The only gripe we have is the length of the game. These games are a little short. They’re still very much great games, but those who don’t like short games may be frustrated with these.
Ninja Arashi is a decent adventure-platformer. Players control a silhouetted ninja and navigate through a variety of 2D, linear levels. The game reminds us of the old Shinobi games on SEGA Genesis. The game contains 45 levels, simple mechanics, and a story about saving a ninja’s son from the bad guys. It’s a fairly challenging game. Many who don’t normally play mobile games may have a bit of trouble. However, we found it to be challenging in a good way rather than a frustrating, bad one. The game is also pretty cheap.
Out There is a sci-fi survival story about an astronaut that wakes up from cryogenic sleep in some mysterious part of the galaxy. Your job is to survive in the harshness of space, make friends with alien species, fix and enhance your ship, and there is a storyline that you play through. It’s a difficult game and one that will have you scratching your head and thinking tactically in order to survive. The game also comes with 59 achievements, a leaderboard, over 350 decisions that you’ll have to make, a crafting system, and, oddly, no combat. It’s one of the better adventure games out there.
Pokemon Go is one of the more ambitious adventure games. You actually go out into the real world and catch Pokemon, fight at Gyms, loot the Poke Stops, and much more. The adventure element is a little more literal in this game than others. It does require you to go places on your own and play the game in those locations. Some may call that lame, but the game is actually pretty fun when you find other people who play and team up. It’s a freemium game, but patient players can circumvent it.
Rockstar has a bunch of excellent adventure games. There are currently three Grand Theft Auto ports, two mobile Grand Theft Auto titles, and Bully. All these games have a similar premise. You’ll get to explore an open world. There is a story line to follow and plenty of side quests to do. The controls can be a little frustrating from time to time. However, they work mostly well. The GTA games are mostly about crime. Bully is mostly about high school. All of the games cost either $4.99 or $6.99 with no in-app purchases.
Most of The Room games aren’t adventure games. The same can’t be said for the newest game in the series, though. The Room: Old Sins incorporates exploration elements along with its iconic puzzle structure. That gives it an extra dimension that the prior games don’t have. For the uninitiated, The Room is a series of games with gorgeous graphics, complex puzzles, and arcane themes. The latest one, One Sins, also supports Google Play Games achievements, cloud saving, and more. This is going to be one of the best puzzle-adventure games of 2018 for sure.
Cube Escape is a series of mystery-adventure games where you must solve puzzles to find out what’s really going on. It’s also known as the “Rusty Lake story” and it’s actually playable online as a web game as well. The mechanics are fairly simple and each game has you solving a variety of puzzles in order to progress in the story. It’s technically they are escape games which means the majority of the time you’ll be solving puzzles. Still, it’s an excellent series of games and all of them are mostly free with no in-app purchases with a few premium games available as well. They all make for excellent adventure-puzzle games.
Secret of Mana is an action-RPG style game. It first hit store shelves in the 1990’s. It’s known for being easily accessible by both beginners and experts in the genre and employs a unique menu system, touch controls that are well done, and a pretty decent storyline. The premise is that you and your friends will battle the empire for control of the all powerful Mana. It’s a fun little game although it does run a little bit expensive. Square Enix has re-released a lot of their earlier titles and most of them make for excellent adventure games.
Swordigo is an platformer-adventure game and something a little more traditional in this genre. You jump through levels, solve puzzles, and defeat bad guys. The game features customizable controls, tons of locations to explore, various gear and magic, and decent graphics. It is a tad short like most indie games. However it’s also fairly inexpensive. It should take most people a week or two at the very most to finish this. Still, it’s an excellent experience.
Telltale Games have released a number of episodic adventures and they’re all pretty good. Currently, there are seven games in their lineup with more coming sooner or later. Each game gives you the first episode when you download it and you’ll have to purchase the other episodes as in-app purchases. Several of them are free to start, including Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead Seasons 1, 2, and 3, Batman, Minecraft Story Mode, Tales from the Borderlands, and The Wolf Among Us. Each game has puzzle and adventure elements with fleshed out storylines and decent graphics. They’re all fairly excellent adventure games and worth a download.
Ys Chronicles are two jRPG games. They were popular in the early 2000’s. They employ hack-and-slash mechanics and the story revolves around finding the six sacred books that are used to banish the demons from the Esteria kingdom. In the second game, the story continues further. That means you’ll definitely need to start with the first one. The mechanics work extremely well on a touch screen and they’re relatively inexpensive. DotEmu has a bunch of other excellent console ports.
