My view of the the past decade is that one started out with ESB solutions based on products such as Mule ESB, Websphere Process Server (WPS) and BizTalk, and have since moved on to integration architectures in which one doesn’t have a big integration product in the middle, but instead use message-based or REST-based (or GraphQL-based) communication between the services, and put all the business logic into the services themselves instead of in an integration product.

What are your thoughts on this – does it fit your understanding of mid-sized application integration trends the past decade?

Under which circumstances would you consider an ESB approach for you integration needs, and the same for a message-/REST-based approach?
