GADGETS

Fresher smoothies: Beko Vacuum Blender

Beko’s vacuum blender retains more vitamin C in your juices or smoothiesBeko

This R;vacuum” blender removes all air before it blitzes your fruit and veg, reducing oxidization and thus retaining more vitamins and nutrients from the contents. This, Beko claims, leads to a 40% increase in Vitamin C over standard blenders.

And it does seem to work. I always blend a large-sized smoothie so it lasts me over two days. But due to the vacuum tech, the smoothie I created with the Beko seemed fresher the next day than when I’ve used other blenders – being much less lumpy and separated, and tasting fresher. This, Beko says, is because the vacuuming process retains more antioxidants, Fibre and Vitamin E in the juice, for longer.

Beko’s Vacuum Blender also has a 1000w motor and variable speed settings with serrated, hardened stainless steel blades, which can blend the harder ingredients such as seeds, nuts and ice. It also boasts four blending functions: smoothie, ice, sauce as well as handy auto clean function.

Weight management: Nutribullet Balance

The Nutribullet Balance weighs your food before you blend it, giving you more a more accurate calorie intakeLee Bell

Launching in the UK this summer, the NutriBullet Balance uses its SMART Nutrition System which sees the blender connect to an app on a smartphone or tablet, and give real-time nutrition , down to the very gram. It does this by weighing the food that you put into it, measuring and tracking as you pop them into it.

It can, therefore, count calories, proteins, carbs, fats, and sugar content of recipes by using the built-in Nutrition Sensor. This is all about making it easier to make healthy smoothies as users can following the recipes built into the app, which are suggested based on the user’s personal tastes and nutritional goals.

INNOVATIVE SERVICES

Your genetic needs at your fingertips: Blueprint for Athletes

BluePrint uses an app to provide you with your genetic profile and help you make more informed decisions on your nutritional choicesBluePrint

BlueprintFit is a biomarker testing service for people who want to know more about the genetic makeup of their bodies so they can make better, healthier decisions when it comes to nutrition, fitness, and exercise. After a blood test, users can uncover their current biomarker levels, which can also be tracked over time to gauge health, wellness, and performance.

This is because the genetic testing tells you how your body may or may not be programmed, and you cannot make modifications to help aid your genetics.

The tech part comes via the app, which lets you control, access and view your test results on your mobile devices. Through the dashboard, you can also view multiple Blueprint test results, instantly search for any biomarker you’ve tested for, and view results that are out-of-range. The app integrates with Apple HealthKit, too, allowing you to share health and fitness data with other apps so you can have all your fitness and health apps in one place.

I gave BluePrint a go in a bid to aid my triathlon training in August and to help me follow my vegan diet to a performance level, but without losing weight or muscle. To make sure that I was getting adequate nutrition and didn’t lose weight while actively training, BluePrint advised me to reinforce my importance of calorie-dense foods, such as avocado, nuts, nut butters, seeds, etc. It also encouraged me to log my calorie input to assess macros to ensure I was consuming at least 100-112g per day and not losing weight but having the fuel I needed.

Nutrition therapy in your pocket: Food Psychology Clinic

The Food Psychology Clinic records the hypnotherapy treatment during your session so you can listen to it at any time from your mobile deviceApple

If your bad food habits are proving hard to crack, you could consider looking into alternative therapies to help treat them. One of the most innovative services I’ve come across is that offered by the Food Psychology Clinic in London. The therapists combine a range of techniques to treat issues around food, such as psychotherapy, hypnotherapy, Neuro-Linguistic Programming, and even just simple mindfulness.

The unique thing here, though, is that they can record the treatments during your session so can listen to it at any time from your mobile device at a later date, in a way of providing a repeat of the treatment when needed and help you stay on track with your health goals.

A personalized diet plan, delivered: Nosh Detox VeganKeto

A Vegan Keto sample dietNosh

The traditional Ketogenic Diet is proven to break down stored fat and trip your metabolic switch to start using fat for energy. However, it’s full of meat, cheese, and eggs, none of which are said to be very healthy. So a company called Nosh Detox designed a plan that replaces all of the unhealthy elements with vegan solutions to form a macro balanced VeganKeto product.

The VeganKeto diet focuses on completely removing the carbohydrates that put you on constant insulin spikes, and once in your bloodstream proceed to restrict your body’s ability to burn fat. Research has also proved this diet is a good mood stabilizer and plays a role in preventing type 2 diabetes and reducing the onset of epileptic episodes.

Nosh Detox offers this nutrition through a pre-made, personalized diet plan and home delivery service to make sure you stick to it, don’t have to worry about what food to buy and thus help alleviate cravings, aid weight loss and give you better energy levels.

SUPPLEMENTS & SPORTS NUTRITION

Okay so the below entries are not strictly a health “gadgets” as such, but plenty of technology went into making them a thing. They also fit hand in hand with the above nutrition tech.

All the essential nutrients, sustainably: Huel

Huel is one of the main ingredients in the Silicon Valley Diet, a cult meal alternative drink that the tech community is currently obsessing over.

Offering a nutritionally complete meal in powdered form, Huel can be dissolved into water to give you all the 26 essential nutrients needed to live a healthy balanced lifestyle on a daily basis.

How? It’s made from real food such as milled down oats which are high in fiber, releasing energy slowly to prevent snacking in-between meals. Due to the ingredients list of Huel, the company says you could theoretically live off it 100% of the time. I say theoretically because I can promise the severe cravings for real food would make this easy to do. Good for those starting a cleanse or detox, I’d say.

Also, all of the main ingredients within Huel are sources of protein. With the brown rice and pea protein, the protein has been extracted to give Huel the ideal amino acid profile to fulfill all the essential functions. Being a powder means users will only consume what they need to, therefore, reduce a large amount of food waste.

Instant BCAAs: NOCCO

During and after exercise, Branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) are needed for repairing and building of muscles. And an easy way of getting this extra contribution of these amino acids is with NOCCO – the no cards company. It’s the only brand right now to offer BCAA’s pre-blended in a can for convenience when training, as traditionally, BCAAs only come in a powder form, to be added to water. NOCCO BCAA contains BCAA, green tea extract, caffeine, and six different vitamins while being completely free of sugar.

Protein for the mind and body: Innermost

Innermost is probably one of my nutrition powders. It’s not only vegan and thus more sustainable, but it combines traditional sports nutrition ingredients such as protein with nootropic adaptogens. These are essentially herbal pharmaceuticals, which work to counteract the effects of stress in the body that are known to harm the neurological, endocrine, and immune systems. This, Innermost says, works to benefit you both physically and mentally.

It’s also is one of few high-protein vegan supplement powders that doesn’t taste like sawdust. I recommend it for use in the high tech blenders reviewed above.
